Whether you’re on a long road trip or just heading out on a quick outing after work, there are many people out on the road after the sun sets, and precautions should be taken when driving after dark. Here are some tips to stay safe on the road when driving at night.

Keep your vision keen.

One of the biggest challenges when driving at night is how dark it can be, especially on rural roads. Make sure you have your eyes checked regularly (at least every two years) to make sure your vision is still safe for driving. Also, it is important to avoid staring straight ahead when driving at night, as your depth perception will not be as good as it is during the daylight. Instead, scan your eyes across the road and your surroundings as you drive.

Make sure lights are clean and properly adjusted.

Headlights are an obvious must once the sun goes down. But, if your headlights aren’t properly adjusted, they can do more harm than good for both yourself and other drivers. Have a mechanic check your headlight alignment regularly. Also, make sure you keep all headlights, taillights and turn signals clean, so you can maximize the light they are producing and keep everyone on the road safer.

Clean and adjust your exterior mirrors.

Just like having clean headlights, having your exterior mirrors clean and adjusted is especially important when driving at night. Poorly adjusted mirrors can cause lights to reflect off of them and even shine into your eyes – another dangerous and easily avoidable distraction.

Stay aware and alert.

It should go without saying, but driving does become more dangerous at night, and requires you to be particularly alert. Avoid any distractions like talking on the phone or eating, and make sure you never drive when you are feeling extremely tired. If you feel like you are too tired to drive, find a safe place to pull over, park your car and rest.
